We first heard about Patrice Surley through other patients.

When you first get immersed in cancer land, it can be incredibly difficult to know who is genuine and who isn't, who actually has experience and who is out to make a few quid from your misery.

I knew pretty quickly after speaking to Patrice that she genuinely cared about the people she worked with. Her attention to detail helped build trust between us and I found her factual and evidence-based, but also kind and compassionate. She became a sounding board in the ever-so-loud space we suddenly found ourselves in.

WHO IS PATRICE SURLEY?

Patrice is a Master Herbalist and Nutrition Consultant with more than 25 years' experience. Her clinical focus includes cancer, autoimmune illness and disease prevention, with an approach rooted in functional health, nutrition and analysis of relevant laboratory results.

She isn't a medical doctor and doesn't prescribe cancer treatment. Her role is different. She works with patients on areas including nutrition, supplements, lifestyle and understanding the wider landscape around their health, while collaborating with medical teams where appropriate.

Patrice has considerable experience working with people with cancer, including glioblastoma, and that was incredibly valuable to us. She understood the world we'd suddenly entered and could talk to us about many of the treatments, doctors, supplements and additional approaches we were researching.

OUR EXPERIENCE

Patrice gave us an enormous amount of information during our first call, backed up with research and links so we could continue reading ourselves. We talked about integrative approaches, repurposed medications, supplements, nutrition and some of the other treatments we were considering for Stu.

One of the things I particularly valued was that she could help us make sense of the bigger picture. By that point we were gathering information from CeGaT, Alacris and different doctors while simultaneously researching Care Oncology, repurposed drugs, supplements, metabolic approaches and other treatments. It was a lot.

Patrice helped us understand some of Stu's genetic testing reports and think about what questions we needed to ask the medical professionals around us. If something wasn't clear from the oncology team, she was often someone we turned to for another perspective and to help us understand what our options might be. She also helped us with Stu's nutrition and supplement protocol. Rather than simply adding supplements because we'd read about them somewhere, we could discuss what we were considering with someone who understood what else Stu was taking and what we were trying to achieve.

Importantly, Patrice was one member of a much wider team. We also worked with Dr Etienne Callebout, Dr Michael Castro, Dr Matt Williams and Care Oncology, alongside Stu's conventional medical care.

CONSULTATIONS

Patrice is based in the United States, so our consultations were remote. In 2021, our first 90-minute appointment cost $250, approximately £190 at the time, and follow-up 60-minute appointments cost $125, approximately £95. Those are the prices we paid in 2021 and shouldn't be taken as current pricing. Please check directly with Patrice for her current services, appointment availability and costs.

2026 UPDATE

Patrice continues to work with people affected by cancer and other complex health conditions. Her current work remains focused on evidence-based nutrition and functional health, with an individualised approach that can include reviewing laboratory results, nutrition, supplements and lifestyle alongside a person's existing medical care.

She also continues to work with people during active cancer treatment and collaborate with medical professionals. Patrice has more than 25 years' experience in this field and continues to be involved in the wider cancer community, including as an advisor to CureScience Institute.

For anyone considering working with Patrice now, I'd use her current information rather than relying on the exact process or prices from our experience in 2021.

HINDSIGHT

WHAT WE KNOW NOW THAT WE WISH WE'D KNOWN THEN

We should have scheduled monthly calls with Patrice rather than every two months. When we had moments of fear or things weren't clear from the oncology team, we often turned to Patrice for additional support. She helped us understand the options in front of us and work out what we needed to investigate or ask next.

Looking back, I think one of the most valuable things she gave us was another person in our corner who understood the enormous amount of information we were trying to navigate. I would also build this kind of support into the team much earlier. There is a limit to how much information one patient and caregiver can absorb, research and coordinate while simultaneously dealing with cancer treatment and trying to have some semblance of a life.

As with everything on this site, I'd be clear about roles. Patrice isn't an oncologist and we didn't use her instead of one. We used her alongside Stu's doctors and other specialists. That distinction matters. If I were doing this again now, I'd also use AI to take some of the weight out of organising and understanding the research, reports and information we were gathering. But I would still want people like Patrice around us, because there is something technology can't replicate: someone who already understands this world, knows the questions patients and caregivers tend to have and can help you navigate it when your own brain is completely overloaded.

Patrice became an important part of the team we put together around Stu. If I could change anything, I'd have put that team together sooner.
